Not sure exactly! In the majority of male individuals, mostly something to do with Genetics, Testosterone 5-alpha-reductase, an auto immune response and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is a multi-hormonal disorder. As men age, the hormone testosterone becomes converted into the more potent form of hair attacking DHT. This conversion is promoted by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. A genetic bias of hormonal levels, as well as, the conversion of testosterone into DHT, can be inherited. A common family inclination involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that cause hair loss. It does seems to require the presence of the male hormone testosterone. Men who do not produce testosterone do not develop MPB. Also, men with a congenital deficiency of 5-alpha-reductase do not go bald. Another factor is the body's auto immune reaction, where the body attacks the hair follicle thinking it is a foreign invader and causes an inflammatory response. Somehow, DHT effects a change in the hair follicle which makes the immune system attack it and your hair starts falling out. People losing their hair usually have a red line of inflammation on the scalp at the point of hair loss. It has been found that the immune system suppressing drug, Cyclosporine, which is used to stop organ rejection - grows hair - as it shuts down the immune response in the body. BUT DON'T take Cyclosporine -you'll grow hair, but have NO immune system and possibly die.

Furthermore, German Scientists have discovered an androgen receptor gene that plays a significant part in male hair loss on the X chromosome. Men always inherit the X chromosome from their mothers, while women inherit an X from each parent. When it comes to going bald, a man is therefore likely to take after his maternal grandfather rather than his father. The gene affects the androgen receptor, a protein that helps activate male hormones. Certain changes in the gene may result in male pattern baldness. The genetic variant is believed to result in more androgen receptors on the scalp. This would make the scalp more sensitive to the effect of hormones, leading to hair loss

Take Propecia (Finasteride) as soon as possible. MPB Hair loss is a progressive problem. We believe this one and only FDA approved oral drug has a very strong possibility of at least slowing hair loss for most males. 

Add Foam Preparation Minoxidil, to the treatment, following a period of Propecia analysis (you want to keep track on what's working for you and what's not).
Minoxidil is the only FDA approved topical proved to combat hair loss. Used to stimulate hair growth and to slow balding. It is most effective for people under 40 years of age whose hair loss is recent. Minoxidil has no clinically measured effect on receding hairlines. It does not cure baldness. Most new hair is lost within a few months after the drug is stopped
