Why do males go bald only in a certain pattern?

Nobody is absolutely sure. It is known that there are certain pre-disposed receptors in the area that goes bald and not in the part that does not. Also under hormonal influence, there is a change in the local immune response in the balding area, so the hair actual comes under attack from the body's own immune system.

What is the cause of Hair Loss?

Alopecia is the general medical term for hair loss and it there are many different causes. The average number of hairs lost in a day is around 50 to 100. Hair loss can be broken down into several main types. The main ones include alopecia areata (round patches of temporary hair loss) and telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss as a result of a stressor on the system). The most common type, accounting for most scalp hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), for which the exact causes and mechanisms are still fully unknown. it is widely accepted, however that inherited factors and the effect of male hormones on the hair are probably the culprits.

I've heard about DHT. How does it affect hair loss?

DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone. It is a biologically active substance of the hormone testosterone. It is formed mainly in the hair follicles, testes, prostate gland,   and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5α-reductase. It is currently suggested that high DHT levels in genetically predisposed hair follicles cause baldness. Blocking the chemical conversion from testosterone to DHT is the goal of current effective, hair restoration products. The only orally taken and approved medicine that achieves this is Propecia, which contains the active ingredient finasteride. It is believed that, Finasteride blocks the formation of the active testosterone and thus allows those hairs predisposed to inactivity to become active again and make new hairs.

My Parents have lost their hair does that mean I will?

Although not the primary cause of hair loss, it is believed genetics plays a major role, especially in male-pattern baldness. It is still not clear whether having an affected mother or an affected father or grandparents etc predisposes offspring to any greater risks.

Can shampoo or other products cause hair loss?

Allergic reaction to any constituent in shampoo or hair products can cause hair loss. Products are tested and approved to be as safe as possible. having said that there is always someone who will react to them. Harsh hair dyes, straighteners, and other caustic products can cause inflammation and possibly result in hair loss

When does MALE hair loss start, if it's going to?

Male-pattern baldness can start in the early teens. Typically it begins the ages of 20 to 35. Family history may help in determining the time of onset of hair loss as this appears to occur at the same time in descendants. Note that Alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, (see above), can occur in children as young as one year of age.

What is the commonest form of hair loss in WOMEN?

This is female pattern thinning (FPT). With age, the hair thins out in generalised areas. Usually the sides of the head are more affected. This type of FPT usually affects more women as they pass through the stages of menopause.

Why do men with hairy bodies tend to go bald?

Both appear to be linked to DHT levels. DHT appears to promote hair growth in certain follicles and restrict its growth in others There is a some belief that this is due to DHT effecting the immune system. If a person has a hairy body it usually means that DHT is being produced.

Is there a connection between heart disease and hair loss?

Some studies have shown that bald men have a greater incidence of heart disease. It could be that baldness is be involved in a larger health issue. For example cholesterol levels are often a marker to coronary heart disease and one report has shown that bald men have higher cholesterol levels than non bald men. It could also be a coincidence or that heart disease triggers baldness

Why do hair transplants grow in a previously bald area?

It's believed that the DHT (see above "I've heard about DHT...") receptors are actually in the follicle itself. If this is true then they would probably be unaffected by the DHT levels in the surrounding bald tissue. It is also assumed that the hairs that are transplanted do not have the same localised immune response as the area to which they are transplanted.

Why can women develop hair loss after menopause?

Hormonal changes that occur at menopause can make a woman's hormones male-like and a number of classic male characteristics are taken on including hair loss.

Is exercise good for hair loss?

Recent articles show that long distance runners have lower testosterone levels. Testosterone converts through to DHT which is implicated in hair loss. On the other hand, stress has been shown to increase testosterone - if you are going to run regularly, slowly build up to it and do not stress the body.
