PROPECIA
™ (Proscar)
It is generally agreed that there is only one oral treatment which has been through clinical trials and approved to treat male pattern baldness. First marketed to treat the prostate under the brand name Proscar, Propecia is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., Inc., of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, USA, and contains the key ingredient Finasteride. In the United Kingdom Propecia is only available via a pharmacist on a doctor's prescription. The use of Propecia by females is strictly prohibited. Men who have liver disease may have to take a reduced dose of Propecia and may require monitoring and blood work performed or may be advised NOT to take the drug at all.

Avodart
(USA)/Avolve (Europe)
Is prescribed for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
(BPH or Benign enlargement of the prostate BEP - increase in size of the prostate in men) and not currently for hair loss. Similarly, Propecia was first developed for prostate and then later hair loss. Indeed, hair loss is a side effect of these drugs and they were not designed specifically for hair loss. However, they are being sold as a hair loss treatment and trials of the key ingredient Dutasteride are underway at the moment. But see our Warning Page
